Access to Information Programme (AIP)

Access to Information Programme (AIP) is a nongovernmental organization established in 1996 in Bulgaria. The mission is to facilitate the exercise of the access to information right.

AIP team is working in several directions:

  • Monitoring and advocacy for better legal provisions and practices in the freedom of information area.
  • Legal help including presentation in the court is another priority of AIP. The legal team has provided legal assistance in more than 4000 cases and provided court representation in around 150 FOI cases.
  • Analyses of FOI legislation and implementation practices, legal help and litigation are presented in AIP annual reports Access to Public Information in Bulgaria.
  • AIP organizes FOI trainings for NGOs, journalists and public officials. Around 7500 have taken part in these trainings.
  • Media campaign in local and national media, distribution of information materials, guidelines, and handbooks on the right to information are part of the public campaign for the promotion of the right to know.
  • AIP is a member and co-founder of the International Freedom of Information Advocates Network (FOIANet).
