Invitation to Conference

London’s response to the new migration

In the framework of the European project “One – stop mobility shops”

Hammersmith & Fulham Town Hall
King Street, London W6 9JU

23 January 2009

ECAS and Barka Foundation invite you to the Conference

The Conference will address the question of how London is responding to the new migration waves following the enlargement of the European Union, with a particular focus on unsuccessful economic migration. Different responses from the voluntary sector, local governments, international organizations and the European Union will be covered. Reasons behind economic migrants’ failure will be discussed as well as issues concerning provision of housing and the use of health and social services. The aim of the Conference is to influence London Boroughs' Councils along with national governments and the European Union in order to improve the situation of migrants from new accession countries. We aim to bring together service providers and other practitioners working in migration or migrations – related fields to share knowledge and good practice, exchange ideas and discuss their research findings. Plenary sessions accompanied by four different workshops will enable a thorough examination of all the issues covered.

Speakers will include:
Mr Geoff Alltimes, Chief Executive Officer, London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham
Mr Tony Venables, Director, European Citizen Action Service
Mrs Jean Lambert, Member of European Parliament for London
Prof John Salt, Director of the Migration Research Unit, University College London
Mr Robert Rusiecki, Consul General of the Republic of Poland in London
Mr Greg Smith, Councillor for Town Ward and Cabinet Member for Crime and Anti – Social Behaviour, London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham
